VR Troopers - Unreleased Kenner Prototype Concept Sketches (Scans)

Working through my backlog of materials to scan and share...

Here are scans of original concept sketches for a line of VR Troopers figures that Kenner never brought to fruition. (42 total pages.)

From what I can discern, these would have been more "doll" like figures that would have featured reversible and interchangeable clothing/accessory pieces to transform between a civilian outfit(s), a karate outfit, and an "armored" outfit.

Enjoy this little piece of history, presented here for the first time! Trooper Transform!

MMPR - The Unaired Pilot

LOL I've neglected this site for 4 years, and forgot to post this yesterday.

Anyways - the topic at hand.

In celebration of #PowerRangersDay yesterday - here's the original, unedited, unaired pilot of MMPR. This saw general release as "The Lost Episode," but was edited for violence, music, and a few other things. (For example - the Zords are called Droids here... that had to be changed for obvious reasons.)

I originally posted this back when I first acquired the tape from Amy Jo Johnson, but here it is again - transfer by me from 1st generation VHS.

The Issue With Shout!'s MMPR DVDs

So, if you've read any of my rants on Twitter about the issue with Shout!'s MMPR DVDs you've probably heard this before. I'd like to make a long blog post, since the issue is hard to tweet about in full due to the 140 character limit. Here we go:

The essential issue is that the mastering facility Shout! Factory used (I could probably go find the name in the Mega Set booklet, but it's not really relevant) for the MMPR DVD set made a terrible mistake - they cropped and resized the video, which caused some nasty anomalies to occur.

The MMPR episodes that were released as "bonus features" on Lions Gate's DVDs (and the DVD of Day of the Dumpster Saban gave out at SDCC/PMC3 that year) are correct and do not suffer from this issue, so let's begin with some comparison pictures.

This is a screenshot from Day of the Dumpster, from Shout!'s DVD release. Now, take a look at a screenshot from the promo DVD Saban handed out:

The first thing you should notice are the black framing bars (on the left and right of the frame) on Saban's version - these are what the mastering facility Shout! used cropped off, an then resized the video to fill the frame. This is a big no-no for interlaced video (if you don't know what interlaced video means, don't worry, it's not important - just know that you can't crop it like this) - if you do it some nasty errors will occur.

Look at "YOUTH CENTER" on the sign - notice how the letter's aren't as clear and now have little halos around them? Not only is the frame now stretched / distorted, the picture quality / detail has suffered greatly.

As you can see, the picture wasn't just cropped on both left and right, but on the top and bottom, too. Let's move on to another comparison:

This is once again from Shout!'s DVD release.

This is once again from the promo DVD - notice how the black framing bars are similarly cropped. See the screenshot comparison link at the bottom, since it's *much* easier to see the errors with it. Look carefully at the lines on the Command Center.

There are once again halos surrounding the lines - they are now much more blurry, the fine detail is now gone. This is why you do /not/ /crop/ /interlaced/ /video/ like this. It creates these ugly errors in the video. This error should have never happened - and EVERY SINGLE episode of MMPR on Shout's release suffers from this. It's incredibly disheartening that this mistake happened, and wasn't caught by QC. Don't get my wrong, I'm still grateful for Shout!'s releases, but this is an error that should not have happened in the first place.

Here's a link to screenshot comparisons for the two images above and two additional ones- look closely at text and lines in the images to see the errors this blatant mistake caused.

Hopefully someday we'll get a re-release of MMPR that doesn't have botched video. It's a shame, really. We finally got Power Rangers on DVD but the mastering facility screwed up big time and no one caught the mistake. Oh well...

Catch you on the flip side~

MMPR Licensing Article from "The Licensing Book" (April 1994)

Here's an MMPR licensing article from the April 1994 issue of "The Licensing Book." Apologies for the iffy quality of the photos, as these are scans of copies of the original article. Still, a family interesting read. Enjoy!

Stay tuned for more! I have quite a few more articles scanned and I'll be posting them soon.

MMPR S1 Press Kit Scans

Picked this up on eBay a few days ago, and it arrived today. Let's begin with the photo scans:

AUSTIN ST. JOHN stars as "Jason."

WALTER JONES stars as "Zack."
DAVID YOST stars as "Billy."

THUY TRANG stars as "Trini."
AMY JO JOHNSON stars as "Kimberly."
"MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS"

Now, here's the first page of the press information. It's a stapled packet of 11 pages, so I couldn't scan the whole thing (easily). I'll probably end up taking photos of the other pages. Stay tuned~ The last 10 pages are now up. Enjoy! :)

Power Rangers Super Megaforce - Volume 1 DVD Review

Welcome to my review of Power Rangers Super Megaforce Volume 1: Earth Fights Back, released by Lionsgate last week Tuesday (12/9/14). I ordered my copy from Barnes & Noble online and just received it today. I went around to local Target, Best Buy, Toys R Us and Walmart stores and was unable to find it, which is why I ordered online. First up, the packaging.

Front
The DVD comes packaged in a standard "eco-friendly" case just as previous Power Rangers releases from Lionsgate have. I personally have a strong distaste for the cases, as I feel they weaken the structural integrity of the case, but what can you do. The slip cover is very nice, it has a nice reflective holofoil look to it. The front cover has a cool shot of the core 5 Rangers, along with the Sky Ship and the Armanda's ship in the upper right and left corners, respectively. Overall, I really like the design of the front cover.

Back
The back is honestly kind of plain, with just a picture of the core 5 Rangers. The Samurai / Super Samurai DVD releases (can't speak for the Megaforce ones, since I do not own them) had a screencap  to go along with each episode on the back, which I thought was a nice touch. Generally speaking, I think the packaging as a whole is really well done. Now, onward to the content itself!

Inside
This DVD release contains four episodes (the first four of the season, as is to be expected):

  • "Super Megaforce"
  • "Earth Fights Back"
  • "Blue Saber Saga"
  • "A Lion's Alliance"

Additionally, as you may have noticed, a code for a Digital UltraViolet copy of these four episodes is included (I blacked it out, naturally). As I first said when Volume 1 of Megaforce was announced, I think including a Digital UltraViolet copy adds another level of value to this DVD. The video and audio quality is what you would expect from previous Lionsgate Power Rangers releases, so there isn't much to say about that. English 5.1, along with French and Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital audio tracks are included.

Now, let's get to the major downside of this DVD: there are no bonus features to be seen! I really think this is a major letdown. While the previous bonus features we've seen on previous releases are lackluster at best, you would at least think there would be something. While no bonus features didn't detract from me purchasing this DVD, it is my major gripe with this release.

Main Menu
The main menu is actually kind of cool. What you see above is the static main menu screen, but after a few seconds clips begin to play, filling up the background with an instrumental version of the theme playing.
Episodes
Set Up

Not really too much to say about the episode select and set up screens. They're there and they serve their respective purposes. I really like this release, as it has really sweet holofoil packaging and contains the first four episodes of Super Megaforce.Yes, there are no bonus features, and that is my one major issue with this DVD. Here's to more (and hopefully laden with bonus features!) volumes!

Technical Specifications:
  • 2014 Color - Approx. Runtime: 92 minutes
  • Region Code 1 (NTSC)
  • Closed-captioned
  • 16x9 Widescreen, 1.78:1 Aspect Ratio
  • English 5.1, French and Spanish 2.0 Dolby Digital Audio
